US applies new tariffs on $200bn of Chinese imports from next week

The US is applying new tariffs on $200bn of Chinese imports from Monday 24 September, initially at a rate of 10% but increasing to 25% from 1 January 2019.

The introduction of 10% tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports has been widely expected since US President Donald Trump in July ordered the office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) to begin the process of imposing tariffs of 10% on an additional $200 billion of Chinese imports across thousands of product categories from food and consumer goods to chemicals and industrial equipment, in addition to the initial 25% tariffs on US$50 billion of Chinese import goods.

300 tariff lines have been removed from the list, these include electronics products such as smart watches and Bluetooth devices; certain chemical inputs for manufactured goods, textiles and agriculture; certain health and safety products such as bicycle helmets, and child safety furniture such as car seats and playpens. Speak to us if you think you may be affected by this and need guidance.
