After 31 January 2020 there will be a transition period until the end of 2020, while the UK and EU negotiate additional arrangements. During this implementation period there will be no changes to the terms of trade with the EU or the rest of the world.
But from 1 January 2021, the way you trade with the EU will change, and you’ll need to prepare for life outside the EU, including new customs arrangements.
If you import and export between the UK and the EU, you can start your preparations now by:
• Making sure you have a UK Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number
• Preparing to make customs declarations.
The current rules on trade, travel, and business for the UK and EU will continue to apply during the transition period.
Trade talks are expected to begin in earnest in early March. The European Parliament will also get a say in ratifying any future trade deal.
The main send-off will happen on Friday, when the president of the European Parliament will deliver a joint statement alongside the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission.
