The Amazon Prime day in July 2017 highlighted some interesting trends in online purchasing.  Firstly the stats – the volume of online orders on this day increased by 37% from 51,727 to 70,946 across all the online sales channels, Amazon accounted for nearly half of these with 30,617 orders, some of this increase is due to extending the period from 24 hours to 30 hours. The time of day for the highest peak order volume changed from 4pm to 8pm which equated to a 40% increase in sales on last year.

It highlighted the rise of browsing on mobile devices, and whilst this isn’t a big surprise, you may not realise that the sales conversion on smart phones is still fairly low. So what this means is with over 50% of web traffic coming from mobile devices it is now more important than ever to have a fast, responsive, mobile optimised website.  Not only does the google algorithm favour mobile first sites, sites with higher mobile engagement get more conversions.

We are seeing Artificial Intelligence beginning to impact on peoples daily lives, the rise of digital assistants such as Amazons Alexa, Apples Siri and Googles Assistant have got people used to talking to machines and relying on them for everything from finding out the weather to ordering a take away.  This will impact on ecommerce more and more, especially in the awareness and research phases of the customer journey, we advise you to explore and tap into conversational commerce to capture the attention of buyers – chat bots and instant chat techniques are a cost effective way to improve customer service.

Click and collect is also becoming more popular and now that it’s accessible and affordable for smaller retailers, it should feature in your delivery service, customers no longer want to wait in for an item – your delivery has to fit into their daily schedule.
